LONDON PANORAMAS - [Matthäus MERIAN (1593-1650), the Elder], attributed.  London. [Frankfurt: 1638 or later]. Hand-coloured engraved panorama of London extending from "Whyte Hall" to the Tower of London, 2 coats-of-arms, with a key beneath to 43 locations, on 2 sheets, joined (some spotting and staining, lower left blank corner torn away, just touching one number of the key),  230 x 710mm., framed and glazed. Howgego Printed Maps of London p.7: "A smaller panorama generally known as the 'Merian' view is one of a number of views of European cities in Gottfried's Neuwe archontologia cosmica published at Frankfurt in 1638. Some of these are signed by Merian and for this reason the unsigned London view is attributed to him. Although it has certain marked characteristics of its own it is undoubtedly based to a large extent on Visscher." With David Loggan's A Prospect of London as before the Fire ... Printed and Sold by John Bowles at Mercers Hall London (London, [c.1700], small hand-coloured engraved panorama, 75 x 310mm., framed and glazed). (2)
