BINDING - Julia FRANKAU (1859-1916). An Eighteenth Century Artist and Engraver. John Raphael Smith. His Life and Works ... A Portfolio containing Fifty Examples of Stipple, Mezzotints Paintings [sic] and Drawings, Printed in Colours and Monochrome. London: Macmillan and Company, 1902. Plate volume only. Very large folio (602 x 445mm). Half title, 50 fine photogravure plates including the title vignette, by John Raphael Smith after Sir Joshua Reynolds, George Romney, John Opie, George Morland and other artists, some coloured, tissue guards (some light spotting and browning to tissue guards, but plate images unaffected). EXCEPTIONALLY FINELY BOUND IN FULL GREEN MOROCCO GILT BY MORRELL, the covers with elaborate tendril and foliate decoration within gilt fillet borders, the spine with 4 raised bands, with foliate decoration in the compartments, wide elaborate dentelles gilt, terracotta watered silk liners (a few inconspicuous scratch marks to the covers, narrow strip lightly rubbed on the lower cover, some very light patches of white staining to the spine and inner edges, corners lightly rubbed, the spine slightly faded). The spine has "Extra Plates" stamped in gilt in one compartment which refers to the 50 plates in the present plate volume rather than the 30 plates in the text volume which is not included here: a printed note indicates its existence on the leaf before the title: "A volume containing a Life of John Raphael Smith, with a Description of Prints and Short Biographies of Persons represented, is issued with this portfolio of prints."
