CANTERBURY - Georg BRAUN (1541-1622) & Franz HOGENBERG (1536-88). Cantuarbury. Cantuaria urbs fertilissimae Angliae celebris; Archiepiscopati sede, commendata. [Cologne: c.1588]. Hand-coloured engraved bird's-eye-view of Canterbury, 4 costumed figures in the foreground, 3 coats-of-arms including that of the See of Canterbury (some very minor creasing at the centrefold, very small repair at the upper margin, not affecting image), 290 x 430mm., framed and glazed. This highly decorative view is extracted from Braun & Hogenberg's monumental work Civitates orbis terrarum which was published in six volumes between 1572 and 1617. It was the second oldest printed atlas, and the first to include detailed town plans.
