Half title, half tone frontispiece, map, 34 half tone plates (mainly marginal spotting and staining to the text throughout, sometimes quite heavy, but the plates clean, one plate with a few short marginal tears). Original green buckram gilt with an illustration mounted on the upper cover (illustration lightly rubbed). FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, the front free endpaper inscribed in pencil, "J. S. Chance, from the author." Joseph Selby Chance, the recipient of this copy, was the vendor's great uncle. Loosely-inserted are 2 autograph letters [one incomplete] sent from the author to her great niece Mrs Rita Cowan Douglas (née Chance), dated 1907 and 1908 respectively, both including charming accounts of teaching local children on the island, and one with a sketch of her house there. "You would like to hear about the little children. I wish you could see them in school. We have a little curly headed boy of 2 years who speaks so plainly & is so good. He one day went to sleep & tumbled off the bench so now he sits on some mats on the floor ..."
