ALDINGTON, Richard (1892-1962). Images. London: The Egoist Ltd., [n.d. but ?1919]. 8vo (183 x 125mm). Half title. Original tan buckram-backed brown paper boards with printed label on the upper cover and on the spine. Provenance: "V. E. W. from C. M. Y. 15.10.'19" (inscription on front free endpaper). First published in 1915 by "The Poetry Bookshop", this was the author's first book. The present edition includes a printed note by the author at the front stating: "These poems are taken from 'Images' (Published 1915 and now out of print), and the various Imagist anthologies which are also being allowed to lapse. I have rescued one or two poems from periodicals. There are also one or two newer poems which did not quite fit into my other two books." A publisher's advertisement in the present copy include these 'other two books', namely "Images of War" and "Images of Desire", both of which were first published in 1919. This, combined with the date of the gift inscription at the front, makes us reasonably certain that this edition was printed in 1919. With 11 other books by the same author, or translated by him, namely, The Poems of Meleager of Gadara. Translated by Richard Aldington (London, The Egoist Press, 1920, original stiff wrappers), Death of a Hero (London, 1929, original cloth, dust-jacket), At All Costs (London, 1930, original blue cloth gilt, with copious pencil critical annotation throughout in an unidentified hand), Euripides. Alcestis. Translated by Richard Aldington (London, "The Dolphin Books", 1930, original pictorial paper boards, dust-jacket), Roads to Glory (London, 1930, original cloth, dust-jacket), Balls and Another Book for Suppression (London, "Blue Moon Booklets No. 7", 1931, spotted, original printed wrappers), Stepping Heavenward (London, 1931, "The Dolphin Books", original cloth, dust-jacket), The Colonel's Daughter (London, 1931, original cloth, dust-jacket), All Men are Enemies (London, 1933, original cloth, dust-jacket), Very Heaven (London, 1937, original cloth, dust-jacket) and Women Must Work (London, 1934, original cloth, dust-jacket), all FIRST EDITIONS. Please note that the original dust-jackets (where present) have been photographed in their modern protective archival Mylar wrapper, thereby avoiding any risk of damage through their temporary removal.
