James Sparshatt (1966 - )

Portrait of a rural Chinese women carrying a load on her back.  This image was taken close to a remote part of the Great Wall of China in Inner Mongolia in 2005.  Her community at that time was largely isolated from the outside world.  Beyond her village a huge new road, still under construction, snaked towards the horizon.  Change was about to arrive.

James Sparshatt’s black and white portraits are full of candour and emotion.
