Romy II 2016 Edition #5 of 25

Romy II is an elegant figurative bronze of a nude woman by sculpture by Nando Kallweit. Nando’s minimalist pieces have elegant, elongated limbs.

Romy II was made using a lost wax, or Cire Perdue, bronze casting technique.  Nando shapes a wax model that is then submerged in ceramic. The ceramic is then placed in a furnace so that the wax melts to leave a cavity. Molten bronze is then poured into the cavity. Once cooled and hardened the ceramic is broken to retrieve the sculpture.  To create the rest of the edition Nando makes a silicon mould of the first piece allowing the wax model to be recreated.

Nando Kallweit is a German sculptor working in bronze and oak.  As a young boy, he was inspired by the beauty and antiquity of a bust of Nefertiti housed in the Egyptian Museum of Berlin.  After the fall of the Berlin Wall, his new-found freedoms allowed him to travel to Egypt and develop his belief in the basic strength and pride inherent in humanity.  His sculptures seek to emphasise this through elongated forms and upright postures.   He reduces the figures to simple gestures and movements creating sculptures with a wonderful interplay between the archaic and the modern; between art and design.

Nando’s work has been exhibited across Europe and is held in many private collections.  He has produced a number of large scale permanent installation pieces for German municipalities and museums.
