early 20th century, the steel viewer hood embossed 'Kinora' and with metal patent plaque to oak platform, 12cm high x 31cm wide x 13cm deep; together with six reels of flip card picture films (lacking card cases) stamped with ‘Kinora Co. Ltd.’ to the central metal cores, numbered 435 (magician swallowing sword), 526 (launch of a boat), 547 (elephants in water), 4396 (gardener with hose), 4413 (World War I soldiers marching to war), 4419 (by-plane taking off and landing), each reel 12.5cm diameter (7)
The Kinora was an early motion picture device, developed by the French inventor brothers, Auguste and Louis Lumiere in 1895, and patented in February 1896. It is also known as the 'Flicker Reel Picture Viewer'
The English company Kinora Ltd. converted the Lumiere invention into a form suitable for home use. Notably the manufacture declined significantly with the invention of the cine camera. In 1914 the Kinora factory burned down and the company decided not to rebuild.
