CIRCLE OF JEAN-FRANCOIS MILLET (1814-1875) A study for 'The First Steps'

The present sketch was sold at Christie’s prior to 1937 as by the hand of Albert Moore (1841-1893), but was subsequently believed to be a preparatory work by Millet for his work, ‘The First Steps’.

However, partly on the basis that this work has been copied by other artists, including Van Gogh, later scholars have raised doubts that the work shown here is an original sketch by Millet.
