Tilson's first solo shows were held at the Marlborough Gallery in London in 1962 and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool in 1963. His work gained international exposure at the XXXII Venice Biennale, leading to his first retrospective at the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum in Rotterdam, 1964.
Tilson continued to exhibit in shows throughout the world and a major retrospective, 'Joe Tilson: Pop to Present' was held at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in April 2002.
