Provenance:

Sir William Lowther (1757-1844), the 1st Earl of Lonsdale and 2nd Baronet of Little Preston and Swillington in the County of Yorkshire. He was appointed a Knight of the Garter and created Earl of Lowther in 1807, after which he undertook the redesign and building of Lowther castle with the architect Robert Smirke. Lowther's vast wealth enabled his patronage of the arts and he also enjoyed fox hunting, serving as Master of the Cottesmore Hunt from 1788-1802 and 1806-1842.
